The 2000 (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, and 20% Merlot) which I reviewed in issue #142, was submitted a second time for tasting, largely because they thought I underrated it. In this tasting, it did not merit quite as high a score as it did previously, reflecting the challenges of this difficult vintage. However, it is unquestionably a very good wine. It possesses an opaque ruby/purple color, good density an opulent beginning, but a narrow finish. Drink it over the next 5-8 years. Tel. (707) 255-1294; Fax (707) 255-5162

(a blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 30% syrah and 20% merlot, from a volcanic site with very little topsoil in the Coombsville area east of the town of Napa) Good saturated ruby. Multifaceted nose of black cherry, black raspberry, framboise, tree bark, leather, licorice and game. Dense, gamey and lush, with black plum and licorice notes and a medicinal hint of syrah. Very ripe but still shows a distinct cool-climate character. Offers a lovely pliancy of texture. Finishes with big but broad tannins that arrive late.
