The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin La Marie is a new cuvée from a parcel of old vines located just below the church outside the domaine, hitherto blended into the Village Cru. It has a tightly wound bouquet of dark berry fruit and wild hedgerow scents and a touch of potpourri. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, a little more structure than the regular Gevrey and a slight pepperiness toward the finish. Very fine.

The lieu-dit La Marie is one of the Dugat family's favorites, and every year they reserve one barrel of the wine it produces for personal consumption. They've now decided to bottle the cuvée separately—amounting to some five or six barrels this year—and the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin La Marie makes for a terrific debut. Offering up aromas of cassis, wild blueberries, dark chocolate and grilled meats, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with an ample chassis of ripe tannins, succulent acids and a long, subtly carnal finish. It's more powerful and muscular than the domaine's regular bottling of Gevrey-Chambertin.
