Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2020-2026, Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2020

This estate makes a fabulous Chardonnay and their 2017 Chardonnay Estate sports a medium-gold hue as well as richer notes of baked stone fruits, toasty oak, crème brûlée, and a touch of toasted bread. Despite its richer style, it’s more medium-bodied on the palate, has solid acidity, and a balanced, beautifully textured profile. It’s going to drink nicely for at least 4-6 years.

There is nothing shy about the 2017 Chardonnay Estate! It bursts from the glass with a rip-snorting, beautifully boisterous nose of warm apple pie, peach cobbler and pink grapefruit with hints of cedar, lime blossoms, lightly browned toast and crème caramel. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers great texture and tension, giving mouth-filling apple and citrus flavors and finishing on a lingering savory note. Yum!

Dijon clones and aimed at a more mineral, Chablis style than Salus. Rather refined and polished. Arguably less distinctive than the Salus but obviously lots of restraint and a good contrast. Definitely not Chablis! But maybe relatively restrained in a Napa style. Excellent balance and good acidity. (JR)

Staglin's 2017 Chardonnay Estate is polished and understated, almost surprisingly so given the heat of the year. Orchard fruit, white flowers and tropical overtones grace this subtle, nuanced Chardonnay. Work in the vineyards to shade the fruit and not lower yields dramatically, along with aging in 500 and 600L barrels with mostly blocked malolactic fermentation all help preserve freshness and finesse. There is plenty of both in the 2017.
