Checking in as 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 80% new French oak, the 2023 Roberta's Reserve is deep purple-hued and offers impressive aromatics of black cherries, asphalt, scorched earth, graphite, and violets. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and seamless on the palate, it has a beautiful texture, notable mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This beauty is going to evolve for 20-25 years. Drink 2025-2050.

The 2023 Roberta’s Reserve has turned out beautifully. The finished wine is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, as opposed to the pure Merlot that I tasted earlier in the year. Adding the Cabernet Sauvignon turned out to be a brilliant move from Louis Kapcsándy and consulting winemaker Tony Arcudi, as it lent aromatic intensity and a bit of mid-palate depth that was elusive. Crushed flowers, spice, mint, blood orange, cedar and grilled herbs all roar from the glass. In this vintage, the Roberta’s Reserve has a slightly more red-toned/blood orange fruit profile that is unusual. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin pull it all together on the close. What a gorgeous wine this is.
The 2023 Roberta’s Reserve, 100% Merlot, is a sensual, polished wine. It is also quite embryonic at this stage and not ready to show all of its cards just yet, but that’s probably a good sign for its long-term prospects. I can’t remember a Roberta’s this closed from barrel. I imagine racking will take care of that.
