Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Neal Martin, Mar 2021

The 2018 Clos de la Vieille Eglise, owned by Jean-Louis and Benoît Trocard, has an opulent bouquet of small red cherries and cassis fruit, maybe just a little heady. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, the 30% Cabernet Franc imparting a subtle tertiary note. Given that the label states 15% alcohol, this does retain a sense of elegance, and it feels focused on its black-pepper-tinged finish. Give this 2–3 years in bottle just to temper any headiness.

Plenty of smoky oak, sweet cassis, graphite, and violet notes emerge from the 2018 Clos De La Vieille Eglise. Rich and full-bodied, it has a great mid-palate, loads of fruit, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Made in an oaky, ripe, yet balanced, and undeniably delicious style, it's going to benefit from 3-4 years in the cellar (it offers plenty of pleasure today) and should have 15 years of prime drinking. The blend is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc.

The 2018 Clos de La Vieille Eglise is a plump, juicy Pomerol redolent of black cherry, chocolate, new leather and sweet French oak. The racy, flamboyant style will be easy to appreciate with minimal cellaring. It would be nice to see a bit more complexity here.

The 2018 Clos de la Vieille Eglise has an attractive bouquet with red berry fruit mixed with cola and light leather and dark chocolate notes. The palate is medium-bodied with furry tannins, good depth with a mint-fresh finish that feels easygoing. Not a long-term proposition, but this Pomerol is well crafted and has charm.
