Note di degustazione
Chalk Hill's 2009 Estate Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot, with dollops of Petit Verdot and Syrah. Firm tannins support plums, dark cherries, mocha, spices and licorice in this full-bodied, intense wine. I get the sense that with a lighter hand this might have been a materially more complex wine, which is to say more in line with the rest of the estate's wines. Today the 2009 comes across as a bit overdone.

(made from 49% cabernet sauvignon, 21% malbec, 17% merlot, 8% petit verdot, 4% syrah and 1% carmenere; 52% new oak): Inky ruby. Cherry-vanilla, blackcurrant, pipe tobacco and pungent Indian spices on the nose, with a sexy floral nuance gaining power with air. Smooth, appealingly sweet dark berry preserve flavors are brightened by tangy acidity and show very good clarity. Dusty tannins add grip to the finish, with the tobacco and vanilla notes echoing.
