The 2014 Cohort checks in as a Petite Sirah-dominated red that includes 46% Syrah and 6% Mourvèdre brought up in French oak. It offers tons of darker fruits, graphite, lead pencil, and ground pepper notes as well as a powerful yet balanced style on the palate. With sweet tannins, solid mid-palate depth, and a great finish, it’s another terrific wine from this estate. Caliza’s Carl Bowker continues to make a ripe, powerful style of wine that never comes across as heavy or cumbersome. I loved his 2014s last year, and these latest 2015s are certainly in the same ballpark. These are smoking good wines I’d be thrilled to drink.

Glass-staining violet color. Mineral-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry, olive and violet, along with an exotic spice nuance. Rich but energetic as well, offering sappy black and blue fruit flavors and hints of candied flowers and five-spice powder. Picks up a smoky nuance with air and finishes smooth, spicy and very long, leaving a repeating floral note behind.
A blend of Syrah and Petite Syrah with a small splash of Mourvèdre, the 2014 Cohort is laden with aromas and flavors of berry compote and fruit liqueur. On the palate, it's full-bodied, sweet and velvety, more than flirting with excess ripeness, though some tasters will surely adore its lavish, high-octane style.
