Punteggio 90-92/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, May 2025

Red and black fruits, leafy tobacco, violets, spicy wood all emerge from the 2024 Château Bonalgue, a blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc that's resting in 40% new oak. This medium-bodied, ripe, nicely balanced, and incredibly pure Pomerol has sweet tannins, beautifully integrated oak, and outstanding length.

Medium to full intensity inky plum colour, a little subdued on the aromatics at first, but the Cabernet Franc florals make their way out of the glass after a few moments. Good estate and appellation signature, the acidity isn't aggressive or rustic but has salinity and juice, and good muscularity lending focus to the autumnal berry fruits. Harvest September 23 to October 7, 36hl/h yield, 40% new oak for ageing.

The 2024 Bonalgue was picked from September 23 for the Merlot, which suffered a bit of coulure that decreased the yield to around 31 hl/ha. The Cabernet Franc was picked on October 5. Matured in just 5% to 10% new oak with longer toasting, it offers blackberry and bilberry fruit, touches of India ink and fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and simple, with pliant tannins. This is straightforward and balanced, with plenty of freshness and vibrancy. There is pleasing pepperiness toward the finish. This is a linear and "correct" Pomerol, but one that is certainly well crafted. It should end up at the top of my banded score.

Espresso, chocolate, black cherries, and truffle aromas create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and juicy, focusing on its cherries, red plums, and strawberries on its zesty palate. The wine is made from blending 93% Merlot with 7% Cabernet Franc.
