Punteggio 87-89/100 · Colin Hay, The Drinks Business, May 2025

Aromatically very mineral – crushed rocks and a distinctly ferrous note, but then the cherry, stone and berry fruits rush through, a little cedar too. Tight and taut on the attack. But this is another wine that loses a little bit of the shape suggested on the attack in the mid-palate, the fruit delivery just a little un-delineated.

Gunsmoke depth on the aromatics, cloves and coffee wash, subtle but evident, with gentle white pepper spice and soft cassis and blackberry fruits. Careful construction, just impacted by high acidity on the finish. 40hl/ha yield.

The 2024 Olivier is endowed with one of the better sets of aromatics this year, with attractive black fruit, black olive and light estuarine scents (even though it is not in proximity!). The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, gentle grip and a little more weight on the back end, leading to a composed and quite persistent finish. The 2024 is classic in style and maybe a bit dry for some, but I like the cut of its jib.

On the floral side with black raspberries, and red plums at its core, the wine is medium-bodied, bright, peppery, and fresh, with touches of thyme, and mint in the juicy, crisp finish. The wine blends 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot, 13% ABV.

Square Chateau Olivier
Olivier

Ch. Olivier is one of the few actual castles in Bordeaux – coming with a moat and drawbridge. Since Alexandre de Bethmann took over here in 2012, the château has been given a new lease of life, with quality on the rise.
