Punteggio 86-88+/100 · Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate, Apr 2025

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2024 La Gurgue reveals an austere, brooding bouquet of dark berries, cassis and spices. Medium-bodied, structured and dense, it's framed by a compact chassis of tannins with a fruity, somewhat firm finish. It will mature in a combination of large barrels (45%), foudres (30%) and barriques (25%).

The 2024 La Gurgue is still coming together in élevage. It offers very good depth, even if the tannins need time to fully integrate. Yields were punishingly low at 12HL per hectare. Claire Villars-Lurton chose not to chaptalize the 2024. Time in the glass brings out pretty floral overtones that complement a core of red-toned fruit. There's good potential here.

The 2024 La Gurgue was cropped at 12 hl/ha because of the mildew. Claire Villars-Lurton told me that it was difficult to maintain the cover crop that grew out of control (as evidenced by some photos). The 2024 has a strong pencil-lead-scented nose, actually quite Pauillac-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied, quite strict and linear with light tannins and a lean finish. Hopefully it will gain more flesh during its barrel maturation in a combination of demi-muids, foudres and barriques.

Spicy, red currants, peppery herbs, and hints of flowers form the nose. On the palate, the wine is quite crisp, and crunchy, with an energetic, orange-tinted, bright, red currant, and peppery cranberry finish. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, with 15% Petit Verdot.12.1% ABV.
