Lail's 2014 Sauvignon Blanc Georgia is unctuous and alluring, but also a bit restrained for this wine, with a bit less richness than some previous editions. Still, this is an intense, oily Sauvignon Blanc endowed with superb textural depth. Lemon confit, wild flowers, chamomile and apricot meld into the super-expressive, phenolic finish.

One of California’s most serious Sauvignon Blancs is the Georgia Sauvignon Blanc, which comes entirely from the dry-farmed Totem Vineyard in Yountville. This is 100% Sauvignon Blanc in a singular style, fermented in 100% new French oak and aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. Quite Bordeaux-like, the 2014 Georgia Sauvignon Blanc is a stunner, with high acid but striking concentration. Offering notes of ripe, melon as well as some exotic mangoes, caramelized grapefruit, and honeysuckle, this wine has a dry, energized, crisp style that is medium-bodied but super-intense. Drink it over the next decade or more.
Lail's 2014 Sauvignon Blanc Georgia brings together varietal aromatics, tension and a phenolic/mineral sense of underpinning structure. I very much like the energy and pulsating minerality here. The 2014, which I tasted from barrel, is shaping up to be terrific. Readers should expect a slightly more linear Georgian than normal.
