The 2009 Syrah Las Madres Vineyard Whole Cluster comes across as inward and brooding. The aromatics have quite a bit of lift owing to the fermentation with stems, but at the same time, the fruit is rather unexpressive at this stage. Dark red fruit, flowers, tobacco and licorice wrap around the imposing finish. This is another beautifully articulated wine from Myriad.

These are the first wines I have tasted from Myriad Cellars, Mike Smith’s new project. I have a slight preference for 2008 versus 2009 when it comes to the Cabernets, as the 2008s seem to have a touch more delineation and structure than the 2009s, which come across as a bit more forward. Both vintages are going to be a lot of fun to watch over the coming years. Tel. (707) 287-1630
Bright ruby-red. Sexy, perfumed aromas of blueberry, smoked meat, truffle and white pepper. Juicy, suave and pliant if a bit youthfully withdrawn in the mid-palate. Restrained sweetness is leavened by a saline element. Good meaty, spicy syrah, finishing with firm tannins and good subtle length.
