95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Barrel-fermentation for 25%. Aged 12 months in barrel. Garnet hue. Dark fruit with the vanilla oak a little more prominent. Sweet attack then round and relatively open. Slightly dry finish. Correct but a little clumsy. (JL)

Deepening with a little bottle age, this remains an exceptional white wine that has a slate quality to the texture, with white pear, apricot pit and lemon. Great stuff from owner Jacques Lurton and consultant Valerie Lavigne. 10% amphoras for ageing (introduced for this vintage), with lees stirring during ageing.
The 2019 Couhins-Lurton has a slightly herbaceous nose, rather austere and needing more fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-judged acidity, more complex than the nose with a very peppery, slightly abrupt finish. Give it another 24 months in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
Tasted blind. Not much nose at all but then it opened out. Then razor-sharp, crystalline fruit. Good for the future but still embryonic. A little too tense and introvert? Sweet finish so far from integrated at the moment. (JR)
