Punteggio 91+/100 · Da bere 2021-2031, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2016

Dark red-ruby. Deep, brooding aromas of very ripe, musky black fruits and black licorice complicated by a tarry element. Fat, silky and sweet but vinous too; in a rather muscular, powerful style but lifted by strong peppery/herbal acidity. Tannins saturate the entire palate. This dry, classic, thick wine needs several years in the cellar to come into harmony and may ultimately merit an even higher rating.

The 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru includes 100% whole cluster since Virgile makes just one barrel, the vines located on the border of Mazoyères and Charmes, next to Philippe Roty. Virgile has worked this plot for three years under fermage and he told me that he is hoping to purchase it next year. He also commented that he was happier with his 2013 than 2012. It has quite a strict bouquet with surprisingly (for this vineyard) broody black fruit, freshly tilled soil and cold wet limestone scents developing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone right from the start. There is good weight here, perhaps a little serious and foursquare at the moment, indicating a Charmes-Chambertin that is intending to mature over the long-term.
