Packaged with a thick wax capsule, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Abate opens to a dark color and smooth consistency. The bouquet is redolent of bright cherry, cassis, dried blackberry, spice and tobacco. Like many of the best wines from this vintage, the nose is initially slow to open. Once it does, it shows elegance and power in equal measure. Despite the thick glass bottle and dramatic packaging, this wine is much more feminine and elegant than you may expect. It is full of pretty surprises.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Abate hits the palate with a rush of fruit and tannin, and then more tannin. I am note sure how fruit will remain when and if the 2010 ever softens into something approachable. The simple fact is that the 2010 is very hard to taste today. In my view, La Poderina is an estate with tremendous unrealized potential. Smothering wines with oak is not the way to unlock those qualities. There is not too much pleasure to be found here.
Tasted blind. Ridiculously heavy bottle! Deep ruby. Fragrant and sweet, with quite drying tannins. (WS)
