Punteggio 94/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Aug 2014

There are 216 cases of Russell’s 2010 Late Bloomer, and it checks in a 100% Grenache that spent 34 months in 30% new French oak. Full-bodied, decadent and seriously rich, it gives up notions of camphor, dried spices and herbs, graphite and licorice on the nose. Full throttle stuff to be sure, but it stays lively and fresh, with a blockbuster finish. It’s not for the low-alcohol crowd, but I love it. I loved these latest releases from winemaker Russell From. His 2011s are excellent in the vintage, with slightly toned down, elegant profiles that stay focused and tight on the palate. His 2012s are even better, with hedonistic, textured profiles and fantastic purity of fruit. They’re all worth checking out. Tel. (805) 714-9966; www.hermanstorywines.com

The 2010 Grenache Late Bloomer is super-impressive, especially considering it spent three years in barrel without racking. Dark red cherry, plum and spices notes abound in an extroverted, racy Grenache that speaks the essence of the Herman Story house style. A sweet, perfumed finish rounds things out nicely. The 2010 spent three full years in barrel, on its lees, with no racking. In 2010, the vineyard sites are Alta Mesa, Larner, Shadow Canyon and Vogelzang.
