100% Moscatel from Lustau’s vineyard  called Las Cruces in Chipiona. Aged for eight years in barrel in Jerez de la Frontera. Raisins and fig jam and the dark, leafy sweetness of honeyed rooibos tea. Intensely sweet but also remarkably gentle. Almost more wine-like than sherry-like, but it does have a lovely ginger-biscuit undertow and spicy fire. Surprisingly, this was fantastic with grilled lamb merguez sausages accompanied by a slightly spicy onion jam. It was also good (very good) with blue cheese (Cropwell Bishop Stilton). (TC)

Screwcapped. I can't see any vintage on the front or back label but there doesn't seem to be much evidence of age. From Lustau's Las Cruces vineyard near Cadiz. Very pale – and very cheap. There's some character to this wine; it's not just a sickly sweet stickie. Floral nose and really sweet palate. Exceptionally well made for a sweet wine this inexpensive. Like Golden Shred marmalade cordial. Quite a surprise at this price. Clean and sufficiently fresh as well as very sweet. Clever old Lustau. Single-vineyard citation on the back label adds confidence. Gingerbread and candied-cherry aromas abound with a sweet, elegant palate that delivers sultana and raisin flavors and spiced, dried plums to close. Drink now.

Out of the 6,500 ha of vineyards in the Jerez region, only 1% is Moscatel. This is from the Las Cruces vineyard in Chipiona, where most of the Moscatel is planted. RS 210 g/l. Average age eight years. pH 3.3, TA 5.5 g/l. Amazing nose – so different from all the rest of the wines in this Lustau line-up. With that raisiny, grapey, seductive sweetness. It is sweet and biscuity, like super-reduced raisins on toast. Deliciously hedonistic and just fresh enough. Aftertaste of lovely bitter-orange marmalade. (JH)
