The Philippe Gonet’s NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée TER, a 100% Chardonnay, offers up aromas of pear, apple, almonds, spices and fresh pastry intertwined with exotic notes. Medium to full-bodied, it’s seamless and sapid with a vinous core of fruit and delicate scents of lemon oil and blossom, concluding with a mineral, chalky-extract finish.

All-Chardonnay blend of equal thirds of Grand Cru Le Mesnil (Les Hautes Mottes), Grand Cru Oger (Vozémieux) and Premier Cru Ludes (Les Corrigniers). No disgorgement details obvious. Complex, arrestingly energetic nose. Unexpectedly broad on the palate. It may be Extra Brut but it's not particularly austere, until a very slightly drying finish. Seems to be some evolution on this ambitious wine. (JR)
A third from the Grand Cru Le Mesnil sur Oger with full ploughing and no herbicide, a third from Grand Cru Oger with full ploughing and no herbicide, and a third from Premier Cru Ludes. 30% reserve wine and 70% 2012 with bottling in 2013. Aged for six months in thermo-regulated oak barrels of 60 hl without any malolactic conversion then ageing in bottle for 36 months. Dosage 3g/l, so this qualifies as Extra-Brut. It is bottled in a rather handsome shape of an eighteenth century bottle found in Gonet's cellars when excavated in 2010. Really rather austere – even a bit green. Very fine bead but just too dry, tart and uncompromising for me. Very well intentioned, I'm sure, but I think you need more age to compensate for this austere build. (JR)
