Magnum. Very rich, baked and even lightly tarry on the finish. Voluptuous and velvety with a hint of dust on the finish. Sufficiently fresh. The brawny school of Brunello. (JR)

Readers who enjoy a full-throttle style of Brunello will delight in the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Manachiara, the estate’s top selection. Boasting a deep, intense color along with expressive, plush layers of jammy dark fruit, spice, chocolate and sweet toasted oak, it is a beautifully balanced Brunello. Expansive on the palate, it displays outstanding concentration, an engaging personality and broad, yet fine tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. Importer: Kobrand Corp., New York, NY; tel. Ruby-red. Deep, very ripe, brooding aromas of plum preserves, espresso, nutty oak and fruitcake. Lush and densely packed, with the exotic fruitcake character carrying through in the mouth. A full, sweet, very ripe style of Brunello more than a wine of site. Finishes with broad, building, mouthcoating tannins and a youthfully bound-up medicinal element. Bigger and richer than the normale but not clearly finer.
