There are three Syrahs from this estate, and they’re all fermented with 100% stems and aged in a mix of new and neutral oak. All three are brilliant wines. Cornas-like with its meaty, black fruit, olive and smoky aromas and the flavors, the 2016 Syrah Hudson Vineyard is medium-bodied, supple, has good acidity, and building, chewy tannin. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or so. Readers looking for a serious lineup of single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay that have a distinctly Burgundian vibe need to check out these releases from Ehren Jordan and Savanna Wright. Failla owns prime terroirs on the Sonoma Coast, as well as has access to some of the best vineyards in the region. While these aren’t for those craving big, powerful wines, they have plenty of intensity as well as singular profiles. In addition to the Sonoma releases, Jordan’s Oregon releases and a few Rhône variety wines are also included in this report.

The Syrah Hudson Vineyard is decidedly ripe in 2016. There is plenty of richness to the red cherry jam, pomegranate and sweet oak flavors. It would be nice to see a little more Hudson character, but the 2016 is undoubtedly fine, just not as fine as it could be.
