(15.3% alcohol) Good bright ruby.Aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, violet and smoked meat. Lush, fleshy and pliant, with enticing, complex flavors of boysenberry, candied plum, chocolate, cured meat, violet and pepper. Rather suave finish features substantial tongue-dusting but ripe tannins and a lingering smoky quality.

From a cool climate site in Coombsville, the 2004 Syrah Caldwell Vineyard (100% Syrah) exhibits a scorched/volcanic earth-like character along with notions of roasted herbs, espresso, cassis, and blackberries. This heady, Hermitage-like effort is distinctive, but not nearly as sexy and opulent as the Fess Parker cuvee. It should benefit from another year or so of bottle age, and drink well for a decade or more. Kudos to Jeff Cohn for another brilliant line-up.
