Deep magenta. Expansive red and blue fruit preserve scents show superb clarity, and suggestions of succulent flowers, exotic spices and smoky minerals build with air. Sappy, appealingly sweet and energetic on the palate, offering black raspberry, boysenberry, five-spice powder and candied lavender flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. The floral note repeats emphatically on the impressively long finish, which features polished tannins and lingering blue fruit character.

Planted way back in 1981 by the Koo family at 850 ft, and managed by Dai Crisp since 1999. Temperance Hill is perched at the very top of the Eola-Amity Hills with unrelenting gusts from the Van Duzer corridor. Dark crimson. The nose is a bit more vegy than fruity with even a hint of black pepper. For the first time in this collection I feel I can smell a little oak. Confident, smooth, sweet palate entry and lots of vitality. This wine really has pace and, presumably, the potential to age. Firm finish. Lots of vigour here rather than simple sweetness. A particularly savoury Pinot Noir. Ideally I'd keep it another year before opening but with food it should give pleasure. (JR)

A very spicy expression of pinot, this has so much to say on the nose. Aromas of forest wood, cinnamon, clove and mace, as well as star anise, are dusted across the boysenberries and blueberries, some herbal tones and a pink-citrus edge. Fascinating pinot. The palate has a taut structural edge that is really unique. Fine tannins are compressed into leaves and layers, the acidity shimmering bright and the long cherry flavors locked in precisely. A highlight of the Bergström 2019s. Good to age. Drink or hold.
