Deep, shimmering red. A highly complex, expansive bouquet evokes cherry preserve, raspberry, baking spice scents and a strong floral note that builds in the glass. Alluringly sweet red and dark berry, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors show outstanding depth as well as clarity. The Temperance Hill tightens up steadily with air. Supple, fine-grained tannins lend support to a strikingly long, floral-driven finish that leaves a sexy five-spice powder note behind.

Made from bought-in fruit from a high-elevation site planted in the early 1980s. Initially thought too cool and too high. ‘ Van Duzer aims straight at it.’ Above 250 m (820 feet) so it’s the last to be picked and is a very particular expression of Willamette Pinot. Pure berry, round flavours. Again, very ready. (JR)
Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2016 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill Vineyard has some tarry/rubbery reduction on the nose giving way to black cherries and blackcurrants with notes of blue flowers and turned earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate gives up sweet warm blackberries flavors with notes of dried leaves and meaty touches, with a wonderful firm frame of grainy tannins and plenty of mouthwatering acidity, finishing long and earthy. Give this a year or two in bottle or decant it. 400 cases produced.
