Punteggio 87/100 · Robert Parker, Dec 2009

Although quite tannic, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Lampyridae Vineyard from Mt. Veeder is typical of a wine from this area. It reveals lots of black and blue fruit, creosote, and spice characteristics, but the tannins kick in in the finish. As I have written in the past, Beringer offers between 200-250 cases of each of their single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons that go into their Private Reserve program. Interestingly, as good as the single vineyard cuvees tend to be, and they’re all very different, the Private Reserve blend is as good or better than the finest single vineyard, demonstrating that the blending process is essential and important. Bright ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of red and darker berries, black tea, coffee, mint, fresh herbs and flowers. Supple on entry, then quite firm, even a bit youthfully tough, in the middle, with solid acids keeping the fruit and fresh herb flavors under wraps. Distinctly backward today, with the firm tannins reaching the front teeth. Lay this one down.
