The 2011 The Head in the Clouds, here in its first vintage, is absolutely gorgeous. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. Still deep and layered, the 2011 is peaking today. I don't think the 2011 will get better from here, but it is superb in this moment. Black cherry, mocha, licorice and leather build into the sumptuous finish. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (from Moulds), 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot.

(blended with 10% each cabernet franc and petit verdot): Bright ruby-red. Sexy, expressive aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and menthol. Intensely flavored and spicy, with entrancing inner-mouth perfume to the black fruit, spice and mineral flavors. Very juicy, lively wine with subtle sweetness and a serious structure to support a graceful evolution in bottle. I'd give this three or four years in the cellar before pulling the cork.
The 2011 Head in the Clouds is fascinating to taste after The Answer, as the blend is fairly similar, but here the personality of the wine places much more emphasis on focus, length and energy. Black cherries, plums, graphite, smoke and ash all meld together in a wine built on pure mineral-driven vibrancy. There is a gorgeous sense of focus in the 2011 that will allow it to drink nicely for a number of years. Head in the Clouds is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (from Moulds), 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot.
