Punteggio 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2006

(includes 5% co-fermented viognier; vinified with 75% whole clusters) Bright deep ruby. Perfumed, complex aroma of raspberry lifted by a suggestion of exotic flowers. Musky, peppery and ripe; firm and penetrating but not at all heavy. The fine, dusty tannins are peppery but ripe. Very Old World in style.

Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2005-2015, Robert Parker, Dec 2005

The impressive line-up of 2004 Syrahs includes the 2004 Syrah Broken Leg Vineyard. An exotic, nearly over-the-top perfume of acacia flowers, blueberries, and blackberries is followed by a wine boasting huge body, terrific structure, and vibrant underlying acidity. With abundant ripeness, purity, and texture, it should age gracefully for a decade or more. It’s hard not to enjoy a visit with Wells Guthrie given his enthusiasm and passion for accessing top-notch vineyards and producing high quality wines. His impressive resume includes positions with Michel Chapoutier and Gerard Chave as well as a short stint as a journalist for The Wine Spectator. Guthrie is one of the Rhone Ranger mavericks who utilizes considerable stems in his winemaking as well as a variety of barrels, ranging from small casks to the large, 600-liter demi-muids. Such Old World winemaking techniques as minimal intervention, natural yeast fermentations, and no fining or filtration has resulted in thrilling wines of undeniable character and personality.
