Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2011-2021, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2010

More perfumed than the ’06 Larner Vineyard, the 2007 Bonaccorsi Syrah Larner Vineyard, 94% Syrah and 6% Viognier, shows notes of toasted spice, thyme, and white pepper, that are supported by black fruits and solid underlying mineral and gravel aromas. Medium bodied and lacking the depth of the ’06, the wine is elegantly styled, showing outstanding balance, and a deft, clean finish. This should drink well for 8 to 10 years.

Glass-staining ruby. Captivating aromas of dark berries, black pepper, Indian spices, cocoa powder and olive; smells like a northern Rhone wine. Then intense and penetrating in the mouth, with impressively fresh, floral-accented black raspberry and cherry flavors dominating. Finishes pungent, smoky and long, with a whiplash of dark fruit and candied floral flavors.

I was surprised by the austerity and tannin of the 2007 Syrah Larner Vineyard. With much less color saturation than most wines from this vineyard tend to have, this wine has loads of minerality, moderate amounts of red and black fruits, with a lean, tough-textured mouthfeel. Hopefully more will emerge with further bottle age, but it is in a relatively charmless and forebodingly backward wine at present. Tel. (310) 994-3207
