Evolving at a glacial pace (like many Napa Cabernets from this underappreciated vintage), the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Bella Oaks Vineyard represents a winemaking transition from Joe Heitz to his son, David. Still dark and rather inky in hue, it wraps black cherries and cassis in an embrace of vanilla, while the medium to full-bodied palate is structured, tannic and long on the finish. (JC)

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Bella Oaks Vineyard balances a slightly green, herbal edge against notes of mocha and black cherries. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky textured and solid, a fine example from a challenging vintage. The drinking window (now through 2030) is deliberately conservative.
