Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2014-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2014

The 2011 Lachryma Montis, Botrytized Old Vine Semillon Monte Rosso Vineyard is an intriguing dessert wine from one of Sonoma's top sites and the oldest Semillon vines in the US. Almond, hazelnuts, honey, spices, licorice and roasted coffee beans meld together in the glass. Rich, layered and voluptuous, the Lachryma Montis is a very pretty wine to drink over the next few years. I wouln't wait too long, as the flavors are already a bit forward. Residual sugar comes in round 216 grams/liter.

A riveting, profound sweet wine from the Monte Rosso Vineyard, the 2011 Semillon Old Vine Botrytised Lachryma Montis is very special. Its alcohol is 11.4% and this bottled white finished with 211 grams of residual sugar. Despite the fact it was aged in 100% new oak, the wood is merely a subtle component in the huge marmalade and candle wax aromatics. This creamy, honeyed, remarkable wine boasts stunning delineation and spice. It could easily be the Chateau d'Yquem of California. I do not know how many cases were produced, but if you ever have a chance to latch on to a bottle, don't miss it! This magnificent sweet wine will undoubtedly keep for decades given its extract level and residual sugar. Morgan Twain Peterson, the son of Ravenswood's Joel Peterson, has hit the wine scene with a bang, producing vibrant, personality-filled, delicious wines from extremely old vines and, in some cases, virtually unknown grapes, such as Aubun, Teredalgo, Trousseau Noir, Le Noir, Mission, Trousseau Gris, Grand Noir and Abouriou, as well as Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Carignan, Alicante Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tempranillo. Many of these sites are heritage terroirs from the ancient past which, until Peterson's arrival, were largely ignored or were co-mingled into some innocuous industrial blend. Bedrock's portfolio is filled with exciting wines. The 2012s reviewed herein will all be bottled and released by Fall, 2014. Tel. (707) 343-1478
