100% Palomino. The Domecq VORS range was bought by Osborne in 2008 when they acquired the soleras. Since then, they have maintained the brands, the solera and the style. Founded in 1790, this solera commemorates the arrival of the Order of the Capuchin Friars in Jerez. Only five criaderas, which produce just 780 bottles per year of an average age of 40 years. Saca and bottled on 31/08/2022. Pungent style, very saline, concentrated. A delight. Toasted nuts, seaweed, salinity. Deep and very exciting wine. Very dry and deep finish. A very exciting delight. Lightly tangy on the nose with very marked acidity. Quite painful to taste because it’s so dry. Too much concentration for me. (JR)
Deep, rich golden brown. Intense and intoxicating aroma of warm, stewed and reduced apricots with a nutty caramel overlay and just a hint of coconut – but not nearly as sweet as that might suggest (in the same way that dark chocolate is not sweet). Then on the palate, you are hit by the concentration and sour intensity with bitter orange and apricot notes creating the freshness where the acidity is moderate. Almost chewy on the finish. Beware: take small sips. Fantastic length. GV (JH)
The NV Capuchino VORS Palo Cortado displays a bright mahogany robe, has a nose of incense, noble woods, quince, a touch spirity and lots of hazelnuts, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is quite bitter, intense and powerful with the roundness of an Oloroso, persistent and full, with good acidity, ending with a note of coffee. Drink 2013-2017. Osborne is one of the classical names in Puerto de Santamaria, one of the greatest names in the history of Sherry, Brandy, and the iconic silhouette of the huge black bull that truffles the Spanish roads id one of the stereotypical images of the Spain of the 70s and 80s. The venerable history was initiated by Englishman Thomas Osborne, who started shipping his Sherries in 1804. Today the company has diversified its business and produces Port in the Douro, wines in different regions in Spain, is still a market leader in the Brandy business, and has interest in other products, spirits, cured meats of first quality (5J, Sanchez Romero Carvajal), mineral water and restaurants, so the Sherries might sometimes be overlooked. As part of the globalization of the big Sherry and Brandy companies and the mergers and acquisitions, Osborne purchased the flagship soleras and brands of the VORS wines from the now deceased Pedro Domecq, Amontillado 51-1A, Capuchino Palo Cortado, Sibarita Oloroso and Sibarita Pedro Ximenez, which for some consumers is a little confusing, as they kind of compete with the existing Osborne line of VORS Sherries, and they even seem to be sold at similar prices.
