Tor Kenward’s early releases are not only living up to the high praise they received, but taste even stronger at age ten than they were when they were young. This 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Cimarossa Vineyard from Howell Mountain is a blockbuster. Intense mulberry and blackberry fruit mixed with wet rocks, forest floor, and licorice are all present in this wine, which has serious concentration, majestic structure and texture, and a long, long finish. It is an adolescent in terms of its development, and probably won’t peak for another 3-4 years, but this is stunning wine. Its should evolve at least another 15 years.

At 15.1 per cent alcohol and with loads of voluptuously ripe fruit, it could be over the top, yet every component is in place: fruit, tannin, acid and even alcohol. Fragrant black mountain fruit and minerals. Succulent blackberry and cassis, liquorice, gentle vanilla and savoury green olive. Crisp acidity keeps this big wine quite refreshing. Tannins are smooth yet substantial. (LM)
