Serralunga d’Alba. Bottle number 287 of 3,650. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Brooding and very slow to open up, but with real concentration and lots of minerally notes. Lots of juicy, elegant fruit and with surprisingly composed, polished tannins for this cru, but they do make their mark. Turns almost a little racy on the finish. It is a classy wine, but fully ready now. (WS)

Only made in the best vintages, the Oddero 2018 Barolo Riserva Vignarionda reveals dark plum, licorice, tar, smoke, camphor ash and sweet cherry. Vignarionda absolutely embraces the power and complexity of Serralunga d'Alba, especially in this warm vintage. In fact, it almost goes overboard with a tightness and astringency to the tannins that will require more time in bottle, and even then, it might not ever completely integrate. Production is limited to 3,500 bottles.
The 2018 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a pretty wine. Gracious and light in body, it shows the modest structure of the year, and also fewer vineyard signatures than is typical for this wine. It is a very, very good Barolo that just lacks the stuffing and complexity of the very best years. Sweet floral and spice overtones on the finish convey quite a bit of Rionda sensuality.
