Punteggio 94/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Jun 2018

Reminding me of a wine from the Côte de Nuits (Gevrey-Chambertin?), the 2016 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard has a complex, darker, smoky personality. Red and black cherries, damp earth, hints of stems, and forest floor all flow to a medium-bodied, balanced, straight up classic Pinot Noir. Give bottles a year or two and enjoy over the following decade. Readers looking for a serious lineup of single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay that have a distinctly Burgundian vibe need to check out these releases from Ehren Jordan and Savanna Wright. Failla owns prime terroirs on the Sonoma Coast, as well as has access to some of the best vineyards in the region. While these aren’t for those craving big, powerful wines, they have plenty of intensity as well as singular profiles. In addition to the Sonoma releases, Jordan’s Oregon releases and a few Rhône variety wines are also included in this report.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Savoy is one of the most reticent wines in the range. Even so, there is tremendous purity and density to the fruit that just needs time to fully blossom. The dark red cherry, plum, spice and new leather flavors are boldly sketched. Hints of blood orange, pomegranate and menthol add an exotic flair. This is one of the many compelling wines in the range of Failla's 2016 Pinots.
