Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2018-2024, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Oct 2018

The 2007 Giorgio Primo takes us back to a time when Sangiovese was used in this blend. In fact, the wine has acquired a strongly balsamic character over the years with prominent tones of cola, eucalyptus leaf, flint, tar and camphor ash. You could argue that this wine seems to be aging at a quicker paced compared to the more rock-solid, younger vintages we tasted in this mini vertical (such as 2008 and 2009). The mouthfeel here shows a mid-weight approach with soft and silky tannins. Deciding to take the Sangiovese out was very painful, Giampaolo Motta tells me.

The 2007 Giorgio Primo is an explosive wine bursting with dark red fruit. It is sumptuous and beautifully balanced from start to finish. Sweet herbs, flowers and licorice add complexity on the subtle, highly nuanced finish. I especially like the way the wine retains its freshness and vibrancy throughout. This is another terrific wine from La Massa. The 2007 was a transitional vintage for La Massa. The Cabernet and Merlot were vinified with an eye towards being blended with Sangiovese but during the maturation of the wines Motta decided to eliminate Sangiovese entirely from the blend to focus on Bordeaux varieties. In 2007 the blend was 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot.

The 2007 Giorgio Primo (from barrel) is 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot aged in 100% new oak with frequent batonnage. It is a big, rich wine loaded with vibrant dark fruit, violets, graphite and minerals, all of which come together in a richly-textured, sensual style. The wine possesses great balance and is very promising at this stage. This is a very Bordeaux-like Giorgio Primo.
