Coming from the vineyard surrounding the iconic Octagon house built by Tom Dehlinger on the estate, the 2022 Pinot Noir Octagon offers fantastic spice and deeper ripe and pure notes of cherry liqueur, mossy earth, and pine needles. The palate has broader shoulders, although it remains light on its feet, with dark mineral accents and a very smooth and refined texture. Fantastic all around, it has the ability to improve over the next 6-7 years and drink its best over the coming 15-20 years. One of the most unique properties in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma County, the Dehlinger estate is a single, contiguous property spanning 80 acres with diverse exposition, soils, and biodiversity. The original 14 acres of vines were planted by Tom Dehlinger in 1974. Today, his daughters Eva and Carmen lead the way in the vineyards and winery and are producing some of the most compelling Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay the region has to offer. The Garbro Ranch labels are one of the region's top values, with a clear lens into the estate’s focused style and transparency of place.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Octagon is another rich, heady wine in this range. Most of this fruit is Mt. Eden clone. Dark-toned fruit, leather, incense, licorice and mocha build nicely. I find the new oak at 45% is a bit present, and yet it works within the context of the wine. The Octagon Pinot is somewhat marked by drought in its dark fruit character and brooding tannins, qualities that emerge with greater clarity as the wine open in the glass.
