The 2011 Zinfandel Robert's Block boasts tons of depth and intensity but also imposing tannins and high acidity. Today, the elements aren't fully put together and the wine appears to be disjointed, with angular contours and less of the fruit I saw last year. This is an awkward showing from the 2011 Robert's Block.

The 2011 Zinfandel Robert's Block emerges from a parcel Eric Sussman purchased during the summer of 2012. A huge, inky wine, the 2011bursts from the glass with generous blue and black-toned fruit, mint and violets. There is no shortage of personality here, but some of the elements are a bit rough around the edges. It will be interesting to see how the 2011 develops over the coming year. Today, though, it does not appear to have the finesse of the best wines in the range.

This lineup from Radio-Coteau and proprietor Eric Sussman was among the most thrilling I tasted this year. Radio-Coteau practices sustainable farming and hands-off winemaking, which includes native fermentations, minimal rackings and bottling without fining or filtration. What ultimately counts, though, is what is in the bottle, and more often than not, these are compelling wines that deserve serious attention. Among many things, Sussman told me Syrah did better in 2011 than in 2010. Yields were down dramatically, but the fruit that was left was exceptional. Tel. (707) 823-2578
