Punteggio 93+/100 · Da bere 2026-2038, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

Moderately saturated bright red. Much more closed on the nose than the Nuits Damodes, with aromas of red cherry, spices and minerals conveying a chalky firmness. In a rather austere style for a Magnien wine, with its tight, sharply defined flavors of crushed wild red berries showing a faintly bitter chalky quality. Finishes with a firm spine of tannins, complex soil tones and terrific length. With shocking energy for the year, this wine is not at all dominated by the vintage. Strong potential here. This vineyard is adjacent to Musigny and, according to Magnien, typically produces a racy style of wine that takes a long time to open. "It shows a type of minerality that doesn't have a lot of fruit behind it," is the way he described it.

Bright dark red. Compellingly complex scents of raspberry, redcurrant, tobacco, spices and fresh flowers. Dense, sweet and very ripe but its concentrated black cherry, raspberry, spice and crushed stone flavors are nicely sharpened by mineral energy. At once savory and sweet on the ripe, very long finish, with nothing hard about it. This beauty, from a vineyard adjacent to Musigny, is still quite reserved but already displays terrific finesse.
