Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2022-2032, Eric Guido, Vinous, Sep 2022

The 2013 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo from Elena Fucci has come a long way since the first time I tasted it in 2016. This is wonderfully expressive on the nose showing tobacco, tilled earth and ash upfront followed by vivid blackberry and hints of camphor. It engulfs the palate with silken textures, no longer impeded by its youthful structure, as dark red fruits, white pepper, leather and savory spice saturates under an air of inner violet florals. The finish remains complex, but no longer youthfully clenched. Instead, it’s a burst of residual acids that adds tension, as balsam herbs, black currants and hints of dried citrus peels slowly fade. A gorgeous evolution has taken place here and will continue for many years to come.

The 2013 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo offers a rich and savory interpretation. The wine reveals earthy notes of freshly tilled earth and button mushroom and it also shows autumnal layers of crushed leaf and black currant. Together, these various elements come together in smooth harmony. The fruit element at the back is a good guarantee of the wine's future aging potential. The finish offers solid tannins and earthy grittiness. Titolo does malolactic fermentation in oak and is aged in French barrique for 12 months.

Soil is different layers of lava, ash and clay, known as pozzolana. 'Stratification avoids hydric stress in the summer as the water seeps through the layers of lava and ash and remains trapped in the layers of clay. Fermented in steel over 10-12 days, malo in barrique. 12 months in French barriques (1st and 2nd use) and then 12 months in bottle. pH 3.35, TA 5.99 g/l, RS 3.3 g/l. Deep cherry red, intense black-cherry fruit on the nose – really generous and deep and just a hint of smoky reduction. Dry, chalky tannins. Deep and long and still needs time. (JH)
