Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2022-2032, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2022

A blend of co-fermented Grenache, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2019 The Highlands was vinified with around 30% whole clusters and matured for two years in seasoned oak. It has inviting aromas of red cherries accented by thyme, sage, mushrooms, pencil shavings and pipe tobacco. Medium-bodied and refreshing, it has velvety tannins, concentrated, detailed fruits and a long, bitters-laced finish. 145 cases were made.

The 2019 The Highlands is 70% Cabernet Franc and the rest equal parts Petit Verdot and Grenache. Its ruby/plum color is followed by a meaty, red and black-fruited effort that has some evolution in its nutty, spicy aromatics. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a ripe, layered mouthfeel, it's going to continue drinking well for a decade. While I always love the wines from Matthias Pippig, some of these latest releases played in what I call the “more interesting than good” category. While all good, there are hits and misses here.

The 2019 The Highlands is dark, savory and beguiling, with all the personality of Cabernet Franc very much in evidence. Black cherry, licorice, lavender, mocha and dried herbs all meld together. There is plenty of the richness that is a such a Sanguis signature, and yet something also quite introspective about the 2019 that is beguiling.
