The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is drinking beautifully, like so many reds from this vintage, though obviously there is plenty in the tank. Wild strawberries, leather and undergrowth scents manifest in the glass, gaining delineation with time. As I found from barrel, there is an underlying pepperiness on the palate, quite firm in structure, just softening a little around the edges as it reaches eight years old. That spiciness on the finish remains intact, a Lavaux ready for the long haul. Tasted at La Lune in Beaune.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St-Jacques 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of beautifully integrated oak, but a very strong licorice scent rather dominates the aromatics upon returning 10 minutes later. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red berry fruit, quite energetic and tensile, displaying satisfying purity and poise toward the sweet and candied, rounded finish. All it needs is a little more length. I’m not sure how representative this bottle was and so I will refrain from scoring. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Having underrated Rousseau's 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques from barrel, then from bottle, I'm happy to have a chance to redeem myself, as this wine is showing brilliantly after just a few years in bottle. Bursting with aromas of red berries, cherries, peonies and spices, framed by sapid bass notes of smoked meats, it's medium to full-bodied, with more mid-palate depth and intensity than was apparent just a year ago, built around melting tannins and succulent acids.
