From the Star Vineyard in Rutherford, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Nouveau Western is a powerful, savory wine. Super-ripe red cherry, tobacco, licorice and cedar give the wine its pliant feel, but the elements never seem to fully come together. This is an awkward showing.

The brilliant 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Le Nouveau Western comes from Rutherford’s Star Vineyard and this is a beauty. Dense black raspberry, black cherry and blackberry fruit, as well as underbrush and forest floor notes soar from the glass of this intense, full-bodied, multidimensional wine. The tannins are finely grained, the acidity low and the intensity and sumptuousness of this is undeniable. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.
