Punteggio 93/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2012

Bright purple. Explosive aromas of blueberry and cherry preserves, with notes of apricot, incense and violet adding complexity. Lush, deeply pitched black and blue fruit flavors show outstanding vivacity and power, with a bright, spicy quality building on the back end. Offers a compelling marriage of richness and elegance, finishing with strong echoes of pit and blue fruits.

The 2010 Syrah Hudson Vineyard Pleine De Chene is made from the northern side of the Hudson Vineyard and is 100% Syrah. This part of the ranch has cooler temperatures and the soils are richer in clay than those found on the southern side of the property. The Pleine de Chene is a decidedly more open, supple wine, that places expressive fruit front and center. I don't quite find the visceral thrill of the T'n'S, but in exchange the Pleine de Chene should drink well pretty much out of the gate. My only question is: couldn't Morgan Twain-Peterson given his two Hudson Syrahs simpler names?

Morgan Twain-Peterson is one of the most impressive young winemakers I have ever met, and it’s not just because he grew up the son of a famous producer. Making wines at this level requires talent, passion, hard work and a great palate, none of which is easily inherited. Along with Mike Officer of Carlisle, Twain-Peterson is on a mission to rediscover what he calls California’s old-vine “heritage” vineyards. These historic sites planted by California’s early immigrants, often home to unknown field blends, remain some of the most fascinating vineyards in California. Officer and Twain-Peterson were tired of seeing these old sites gobbled up by industrial-scale wineries, so they decided to do something about it. Bravo. Vintage 2010 was not kind to Twain-Peterson. Five vineyards were totally scorched by the late summer heat spikes and the crop from those sites were lost. But back to the positive, and there is plenty of that here. This lineup includes several wines that deliver phenomenal quality for the money. Tel. (707) 364-8763; www.bedrockwineco.com
