Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2009-2016, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2009

Primarily Syrah, the 2005 Sanguis Bossman is probably the softest of the Sanguis lineup and exhibits knockout aromatics of cassis, spiced meat and graphite, medium to full body and a mouth filling, easy drinking texture. The wine shows class on the long finish. Enjoy this over the next 5 to 7+ years.

A somewhat similar blend from the Watch Hill Vineyard, the 2005 Bossman is composed of 99% Syrah and 1% Viognier. More structured, tannic, and powerful than the Optimist, the Bossman exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue followed by notes of charcoal, smoked herbs, blackberries, and cassis. Significant tannin suggests it will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring; it should keep for a decade or more. This interesting operation uses distinctively artistic labels, much in the style of Sine Qua Non, as well as heavy bottles. Tel. (805) 640-9432

(includes 1% viognier) Inky violet. Smoky, vanilla-accented cherry and boysenberry on the nose, accented by powerful vanillin oak spice and floral oils. Deep, chewy and sweet, offering a velvety texture and an array of dark fruit compote flavors. Finishes with excellent sappy persistence. This is probably more suited to small-dose tasting than meal-time drinking, but it is undeniably impressive, especially if you like the style.

Floral, with plenty of creamy, toasty oak, espresso roast, blackberry, and cassis notes is the 2005 Syrah Bossman, which comes from the Bien Nacido, Westerly, and Tres Burros vineyards. Sadly, there are only 120 cases of this big wine. Carrying its power, weight, and richness in an elegant manner, it should drink well for 7-10 years or longer. The packaging of these outstanding offerings from proprietor Matthias Pippig is reminiscent of that of Elaine and Manfred Krankl’s Sine Qua Non (i.e., hand-painted labels and heavy, over-sized bottles). Moreover, the wines are top-notch. Phone: 805-640-9432 Email: mail@sanguiswine.com
