(95% sangiovese and 5% syrah; 30% new French oak): Deep ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes candied dark berries and cherry pit, with smoke, anise and cola accents building in the glass. Sappy, penetrating bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors show very good depth and a refreshing peppery nuance. Sweet and energetic on a lingering finish shaped by smooth, even tannins.

Superb, with a perfect mix of complexity, fruit and texture, the 2010 Tierra de Jonata is massively constructed and rich, with the savory chewiness that’s found in the other vintages being nicely balanced by a core of sweet fruit. Beautifully done, enjoy it over the coming decade. Drink now-2023. This was an incredible tasting with winemaker Matt Dees. This estate continues to produce some of the most impressive, long-lived wines in Santa Barbara. As I’ve learned from past tasting, it’s always best to schedule this appointment at the end of the day as these effort have no shortage of tannin and can wreak havoc on one’s palate. While I’ve routinely tasted the La Sangre de Jonata for a number of years now, it was great to be able to go back through past vintages of this estate’s other wines. In addition to these efforts bottled under the Jonata label, I was also able to taste their The Hilt and The Pairing releases, both of which are also reviewed in this report (and highly recommended). A dark, earthy wine the Sangiovese-based 2010 Tierra boasts gorgeous power and depth. Black cherries, menthol incense and licorice all burst from the glass, followed by a kick of Sangiovese acidity and tannin. The 2010 opens up beautifully with time in the glass. Sensual and layered, the Tierra is super impressive in this vintage. A dollop of Syrah (5%) adds mid-palate pliancy and roundness. The 2010 was aged in French oak barrels (350L and 500L), 30% new.
The 2010 Tierra (Sangiovese) emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, mint, spices, licorice and tobacco all of which come together beautifully in the glass. There is a transparency to the 2010 that is marvelous to behold. Stylistically, the 2010 is a bit more laid back and less exuberant than the 2009. The 2010 includes 5% Syrah, but also comes across as a bit more Sangiovese-driven in personality than the 2009.
