Good deep red. Bitter cherry, menthol, licorice and a whiff of old wood on the nose. Then silkier and fuller in the mouth than the Vendanges Selectionnees, and much easier to taste today. This has more fat for its tannins.

The most foursquare of Lafarge’s 2002s, the Volnay 1er Cru is light to medium-bodied and structured. Fresh red and black berries can be discerned in this effort’s tightly wound yet impressively endowed character. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015. (a blend of Mitans and Chanlins) Good deep red. Highly perfumed aromas of red cherry, raspberry and flowers. Silky-sweet, pliant and aromatic, with lovely vinosity. Finishes long and firm, with very suave tannins. Should make a very seductive Volnay.
