Punteggio 94/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Dec 2011

Beautifully aromatic and complex, the 2009 Denner Syrah The Dirt Worshipper is a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier that spent 18 months in 65% new French, 10% new Hungarian and 25% neutral barrels. Showing a seamless array of crème de cassis and wild berry styled fruits, peppered meat, game, violet, and smoked leather on the nose, this full-bodied Syrah is rich, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, yet also possesses fantastic freshness, notable purity, and sound underlying tannin structure and length. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age (or a 2 hour decant), and should age gracefully for 15+ years.

(95% syrah and 5% viognier, aged in two-thirds new oak): Bright purple. Slow to open on the nose, eventually offering up scents of dark fruit preserves, olive, floral oils and vanilla. Broad, deeply pitched cassis and blueberry flavors stain the palate, with gentle acidity providing lift. Very rich but also lively, with impressive finishing thrust and a lingering note of candied violet. No way I'd open this one for at least another five years.
