The 2016 Chardonnay Sebastopol Vineyard, aged 16 months in 70% new French oak, bursts forth with gregarious white grapefruit, yuzu and lemonade notes with touches of lime cordial, white blossoms, white peaches and chalk dust plus a hint of marzipan. The concentrated, full-bodied palate is packed with tightly wound citrus and mineral layers marked by a crisp line, finishing very long. 149 cases produced.

The 2016 Chardonnay Sebastopol Vineyard comes from a vineyard in the Russian River Valley and vines planted in 1980 by Warren Dutton. It was barrel fermented and spent 16 months in 70% new French oak. Its medium gold color is followed by a spicy, orchard fruit and white flower-scented white that has bright, juicy acidity, a building texture, and a great finish. Reminding me of a Russian River Valley Chardonnay from the like of Mark Aubert, this powerful, yet fresh, layered, multi-dimensional effort is certainly up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. These brilliant wines from Chateau Boswell are made by renowned winemaker/consultant Philippe Melka, with assistants from Allison Nunnikhoven. I found all f the wines to have classic, balanced, age-worthy profiles, and they’re some of the gems in this report.
