The 2017 Optimist is a blend of 55% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 15% Petite Sirah and splashes of Roussanne and Viognier. It has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and a nose of dried plums, toasted coconut, pencil shavings, candied peaches and wet leaves. The 2017 Optimist is a kitchen sink blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petit Sirah, Roussanne, Viognier, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deeper ruby/plum color is followed by a great nose of ripe blackberry and currant fruits, toasted bread, roasted herbs, chocolate, and ground pepper. With full-bodied richness, a rounded, elegant texture, and ripe tannins, it's a terrific value in the lineup.
The 2017 Optimist is a terrific introduction to the Sanguis reds. Sweet cherry and plum fruit open up first, followed by hints of cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and flowers that add nuance. Medium in body yet rich, as all these wines are, the Optimist has plenty to offer. The immediate, open-knit style is so appealing. The 2017 spent 25 months in barrel.
