The 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru is, to quote Antoine Gouges, an "outside vintage.” At seven years old, it has an open bouquet of mulberry, undergrowth and wilted rose petal aromas, a little ferrous in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, rustic in style and just missing some depth and grip on the finish. Slightly bitter, perhaps. I want to like this more than I actually do, and it has a hard job following the splendid nascent 2019.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saints-Georges was very reduced on the nose, depriving this of adequate terroir expression. The palate is simple, easy-going with clean sappy fruit (red cherries and soy-tinged strawberry) although it is missing a little depth towards the finish. I wonder if this will put on weight with age [Post-script: this was written prior to the identity being revealed. Gouges' wines do indeed tend to gain substance with bottle maturation.] If it does, it will turn into a very satisfying Nuits Saint-Georges. Tasted September 2016.
Notably dark crimson. Very solid and concentrated on the nose. Some whiff of cordite and some quite extracted fruit. Set for the long term. Atypical of the vintage. Pretty drying on the end. (JR)
Bright red. Ripe, musky aromas of red berries, minerals and rust. Suave and creamy-sweet in the mouth, with an almost jammy ripeness but also very good framing acidity to the crunchy red berry flavors. Perhaps a bit youthfully disassociated at present, not to mention firmly tannic on the back end, yet this is easier to taste today than the Vaucrains owing to its sheer sex appeal. Offers superb potential.
