The 2012 Fuego y Mar, 100% from Ulisses Valdez's Silver Eagle vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, is a real head-turner. Violets, lavender, plums, blackberry jam, cassis and orange rind are all laced together in a silky, perfumed Syrah long on class and pure texture. Polished and exceptionally balanced to the core, the 2012 is super-impressive from the very first taste.

(100% syrah, reportedly from Cote-Rotie and Hermitage clones): Saturated ruby to the rim. Pungent aromas of crushed blackberry, minerals, oil-cured black olive, violet and formerly illegal herb. High-pitched and on the lean side, with a penetrating juicy quality to the flavors of carob, minerals and dried wildflowers. More convincing on the nose than on the palate today but this is a wine to follow.
